How Tatas took care of Employees 150 years ago?


We often believe that the best practices in Indian companies have been inspired from corporations in developed economies.
Here, the author shares, employee and labour welfare initiatives implemented in India’s hinterland by Jamsetji Tata at Empress Mills, the flagship company of the Tata Group in the 1800s. This was a time when we didn’t even have electricity in most parts of India. You would be amazed to know of the farsighted leadership of Jamsetji and his priority for employees’ wellbeing, over 150 years ago.
The author also covers another event in the post World War I era of 1920s, when Dorabji Tata, then Chairman of Tata Sons, saved Tata Steel from the brink of bankruptcy under the British Raj. How did he do that? And why?
