Acyclovir is antiviral drug that is used mainly for herpes infection. It is phosphorylated into acyclovir triphosphate which structurally resemble guanosine triphosphate. Acyclovir triphosphate binds to and inhibit the elongation of viral DNA.

In this video we’ll briefly discuss what is Acyclovir, how it works, what it’s used for, the dose and side effects, contraindications and precautions.
Acyclovir is an antiviral active against herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster virus. It inhibits viral DNA replication by interfering with viral DNA polymerase.
It is available as 200 mg, 400 mg and 800 mg tablets, and as 40 mg/ml oral suspension. Also available for topical use and injection.
Acyclovir uses:
Treatment of recurrent or extensive oral and oesophageal herpes in immunocompromised patients.
Treatment of herpetic keratouveitis.
Treatment of genital herpes.
Secondary prophylaxis of herpes in patients with frequent and/or severe recurrences.
Treatment of severe forms of zoster: necrotic or extensive forms, facial or ophthalmic zoster.
Dosage of Acyclovir:
Treatment of recurrent or extensive oral and oesophageal herpes in immunocompromised patients, treatment of herpetic keratouveitis
Child under 2 years: 200 mg 5 times per day for 7 days
Child over 2 years and adult: 400 mg 5 times per day for 7 days
Treatment of genital herpes
Child over 2 years and adult: 400 mg 3 times per day for 7 days; in immunocompromised patients, continue treatment until clinical resolution
Secondary prophylaxis of herpes in patients with frequent and/or severe recurrences
Child under 2 years: 200 mg 2 times per day
Child over 2 years and adult: 400 mg 2 times per day
Treatment of severe forms of zoster
Adult: 800 mg 5 times per day for 7 days
And for topical use, for both adults and children: Apply to lesions every 3 hr, 6 times/day.
Contraindications:
Do not administer to patients with hypersensitivity to acyclovir.
Acyclovir side effects:
Acyclovir ( Zovirax ) may cause: headache, skin rash, allergic reactions, gastrointestinal disturbances, raised transaminases, neurologic disorders in patients with renal impairment and elderly patients; rarely, haematological disorders.: Reactions range from mild to life threatening.
Precautions:
Reduce dosage in patients with renal impairment.
Drink a lot of liquid during treatment.
Genital herpes: Sexual intercourse must be avoided when lesions are present. Use of acyclovir does not prevent transmission.
Pregnancy: no contraindication
Breastfeeding: no contraindication

Thuốc Acyclovir là một trong số các loại thuốc kháng virus, nó có tác dụng làm chậm sự phát triển và lây lan của virus, tạo điều kiện thuận lợi cho cơ thể chống lại nhiễm trùng.
Thuốc Acyclovir được sử dụng trong điều trị các bệnh: thủy đậu, bệnh zona thần kinh, herpes sinh dục, vết loét lạnh. Ngoài ra, thuốc Acyclovir còn được sử dụng với nhiều nhiều mục đích khác, tùy theo tình trạng bệnh và chỉ định của bác sĩ.
Thuốc Acyclovir được sử dụng trong điều trị các bệnh nhiễm trùng do một số loại virus gây ra. Acyclovir điều trị các vết loét xung quanh miệng do virus herpes gây ra, bệnh zona do virus zona zoster gây ra và bệnh thủy đậu.
Acyclovir cũng được sử dụng để điều trị đợt bùng phát của bệnh herpes sinh dục. Với những bệnh nhân bị tái phát thường xuyên, thuốc acyclovir được sử dụng để giảm số lượng các đợt tái phát.
Acyclovir là một loại thuốc kháng virus. Song nó không thể chữa khỏi các bệnh nhiễm trùng. Virus gây bệnh nhiễm trùng có thể tiếp tục sống trong cơ thể người bệnh, thậm chí là giữa các đợt bùng phát.
Liều lượng của thuốc dành cho người lớn?
Với mỗi diện bệnh, thuốc Acyclovir sẽ được dùng với liều lượng khác nhau. Cụ thể:
Người bị nhiễm Herpes Simplex – niêm mạc/hệ miễn dịch
Đường uống: Giai đoạn ban đầu hoặc điều trị không liên tục: nên uống 200 mg mỗi ngày. Mỗi ngày sử dụng tối đa 5 lần, mỗi lần cách nhau 4 giờ. Giai đoạn bệnh tái phát: nên uống 200 mg/lần. mỗi lần uống cách nhau 4 giờ. Nên uống 5 lần/ngày. Nếu sử dụng trong 5 ngày nên uống 400 mg/ Lần. Ngày uống 3 lần.
