Everyone thinks they know about sumo wrestling because they believe it’s about two fat fighters slamming into each other. Forget the wobbly breast, thunder thighs, and the theatrics that come with the fight; this sport is even more tedious than you think. Until you read in between the lines, you may never understand what this Japanese sport is. They undergo incredible routines, exaggerated diets, and absurd conditions that ordinary people would be tempted to back out, yet; they stay put.

From their overly regimented lifestyle to the most preposterous rules on the planet, here are fifteen things you didn’t know about sumo fighters.

15. Sumo life in hard

Forget the razzmatazz and fame associated with sumo wrestling; these guys go through a whole lot. Outside their training schedule, they do not live lavish lifestyles, as you may assume. In reality, their life is the most regimented and disciplined of all athletes in the world. Over time, they develop a thick skin to cope with all the challenges. These wrestlers eat, live, and sleep in a stable throughout their career. They are allowed to leave only when they get married. The situation is dire for the lowerranked wrestlers who wake up earlier to prepare the meals, serve
the food, wash the dishes and clean the house. The younger ones have to endure systemic hazing to make them toughen up. This is a culture that has been entrenched from time immemorial. Can you tolerate this treatment?

14. Sumo wrestlers haven’t always been fat

It is only recently that these fighters developed the chubbiness they’re famous for. Since there were no weight divisions in the sport, every participant in professional sumo wanted to be as big as possible to defeat their opponent. No need to wonder why they get obese within a short period. Thanks to chanko nabe, they can gather as much fat as they need for the spot. The meal is a hotpot packed with veggies, meat, and noodles. The food contributes a quota to their weight followed by a routine to exercise on an empty stomach. After eating, they go to bed immediately to help convert about 10,000 calories into bulk. Their weight means that their life expectancy is ten years shorter than an average Japanese male.

13. They can quit the sport

Sumo wrestling is not a lifelong career. Players can call it quits and move to another job for many reasons. In some cases, they leave due to health issues that could affect their performance. Others would rather move on to other career paths honorably instead of facing the shame of demotion. Some fighters continue till they are old and need to rest. Only a handful of them continues fighting in their 40’s. Regardless of their reason for quitting, they perform a haircutting ceremony where the top of their hair knot is cut. This event signifies the end of their professional career. In most cases, they graduate to be a stable master where they teach younger wrestlers in their stable.

12. They must wear traditional clothes

Unlike other athletes, the international sumo federation dictates how a fighter should appear in public. If you wouldn’t keep to this strict rule, you’ll be shown the way out. They also wear a traditional dress when in public; thus, you can easily identify them. You can also tell they are wrestlers because of their size which is ten times the average human size. Not only do they wear traditional dresses, but they must abide by the specifics. The less experienced wrestlers must wear a cotton robe and wooden sandals, while the higher ranking fighters can wear swanky robes.

11. Sumo wrestlers dance

As a firsttime spectator, you would be confused in the first few seconds. First, you’ll wonder if you mistakenly stumbled upon a dance competition. No, you didn’t – you’re right behind a sum wrestling ring. The ring entering ritual resembles a dance. When a player is about to enter the ring, he claps his hand and stomps his leg to drive away evil spirits from the ring. This movement is often stylized and rhythmic. Wrestlers then face each other and clap their hands again. Before the match starts, they spread their arms wide to prove that they do not have weapons.
