This video lesson demonstrates how to interpret the results of the BauerKirby method of antibiotic susceptibility testing by measuring the diameter of any zones of inhibition and then referring to a Zone Size Interpretive Chart to determine if that bacterium is susceptible, intermediate, or resistant to that antibiotic.

An infection can be caused by either gram positive or gram negative bacteria. Knowing which type of bacteria that caused infection will help determine the right antibiotic for each infection. We would not want to just give a broad spectrum antibiotic randomly because that would contribute to creating superbugs. The zone of inhibition in antibiotic sensitivity test will help determine which antibiotic work for each type of bacteria.
