Hi! I’m an internal medicine resident, but today I’m shadowing a nurse! Join me for a unique day in the life of a DOCTOR SHADOW an ICU NURSE for a 12 hour shift!
This has been such a fun day and really an eye opening experience. The team work between nurses, how to mix and give medications, preparing for code blues, providing care to patients and of course… lots of charting!
HUGE THANK YOU to Amy and the ICU team for allowing me to capture these moments. It was truly unforgettable!

Welcome back! Today I discuss what exactly a Nurse Practitioner is, and what they do. In becoming a Nurse Practitioner (NP), I’ve realized SO many people have no idea what my job entails.
Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses with advanced education and training to be able to assess, diagnose, and treat patients. This is similar to the role of a physician assistant or physician. However, in many states and settings Nurse Practitioners work handinhand in collaboration with physicians to provide the best care to our patients.
This does NOT mean a Nurse Practitioner does not know what they are doing and has to run everything by a physician first it simply means the physician is used as a resource for when the NP may have questions or concerns. All pride aside the physician training is very robust and comprehensive, and it is in the patient’s best interest for EVERY practicing clinician to have other colleagues who they can consult if needed.
