The idea of embracing a perfectionist identity takes away our power to control the outcomes of our lives. We can take control of our personal power by understanding the detrimental belief of perfectionism and embracing the idea that we are naturally imperfectionist. The more we understand how perfection is unattainable, the less control it has over us. The more we understand how our imperfections are natural, the more power we have over our thoughts and our actions. The power is within us, we just need to understand how to identify it and how to use it. Elon Kline is a sophomore at the University of Delaware pursuing a degree in Interpersonal Effectiveness in Leadership. Elon is passionate about selfdevelopment seen by his pursuit for a future career in motivational speaking. “We typically aim for a particular career because we have been deeply impressed by the exploits of the most accomplished practitioners in the field. We formulate our ambitions by admiring the beautiful structures of the architect tasked with designing the city’s new airport, or by following the intrepid trades of the wealthiest Wall Street fund manager, by reading the analyses of the acclaimed literary novelist or sampling the piquant meals in the restaurant of a prizewinning chef. We form our career plans on the basis of perfection.

Then, inspired by the masters, we take our own first steps and trouble begins. What we have managed to design, or make in our first month of trading, or write in an early short story, or cook for the family is markedly and absurdly, beneath the standard that first sparked our ambitions. We who are so aware of excellence end up the least able to tolerate mediocrity – which in this case, happens to be our own….”

The Problem With Perfectionism

“Perfectionism is the unreasonable and selfdefeating ambition of getting something absolutely right – which makes us difficult to be around and punishing to live within.
The origins of perfectionism lie in the imagination, in the ease with which we can conjure up a picture of an ideal state of affairs, compared with the monstrous difficulty of bringing such a state into being by ourselves. The sickness of perfectionism gestates in the fertile gap between our noble visions and our mediocre reality…”

  1. It touches me to know that there are other people that deal with the same problem I do. But the dilemma is, I already know that Perfectionism is not a great lifestyle, however, I feel like I need to push myself, be the best version of myself, and that a better and more quality person equals a better life experience. I still can't get over this. 😥

  2. I'm in my mid 20's now and up until now I have nothing but regret for all the things I missed. I took things too seriously and never allowed myself to just be, and now I know it was because of being a perfectionists. I could never just go with the flow and just be. I could only do something if I was sure it would be perfect, so I missed out on a lot. I want to change that and just live imperfectly and free, watching talks like this one really helps, thank you!

  3. 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.

One day, a wise and prolific vase maker decided to separate his class into 2 groups for 1 month.

1 group was tasked with trying to make the one most perfect vase they possibly could, while group #2 was tasked with making one vase a day, no matter how bad it was.

1 month later, the wise vase maker stood in front of his pupils, and examined their vases. To the surprise of almost everyone, the last vases of group 2 were ALL BETTER than those of group 1. What does this tell you? 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙡 𝙤𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧.

  4. I can't believe that I never realized that for me to consider something I do as "adequate" or finished, there needs to be zero flaws??? I didn't realize that I didn't even know what the definition of perfectionism is, thats just how I've been living my entire life.

  5. This was touching on the wound in a "feel good" way somehow. Thank you Elon Kline for being willing to be imperfect and to lift others up!

  6. TIC TOC technique. Dr. Burns mentioned it, but it was someone else's technique. You compare a Task Interfering Cognition with a Task Oriented Cognition. Those little thoughts really get in the way to how we perceive a task. Dare to be mediocre, lofty goals aren't always the answer.

  7. Worst TEDx ever.

Bad delivery consisting of lazy visuals drawn by a 3rd grader, equally lazy jokes (audience reaction @ 4:54 lol), and a perfunctory glimpse at the lifestyle of a perfectionist rather than an explanation as to “*WHY* someone is a perfectionist” (see TITLE). Instead you offered a cursory overview of “how perfectionism governs one’s life” (as stated @ 2:22).

Oh and “you bet your bosom” isn’t a thing people say.

  9. "Everything does not have to align."
Suddenly struck me, does everything ever align in our universe.

If it doesn't ever occur, how delusioned we are to wait for it.

You may be able to force it to happen by not doing anything & not going anywhere on your selected aligned day. So as to avoid coming into contact with anything that may throw you off alignment. E.g rude people, awkward situation, making a wrong decision, in order to ensure highest chance that you have a perfectly aligned day. But that description already sounds like a delusion to me.

I think the reason we crave for things to align before starting/doing/commiting/deciding is because we perceive only then we'll have best chance to get our desired outcome or succeed and be happy.

But, by not doing/deciding ensures that we don't get anywhere close to the desired outcome.

    For all struggling with this;
    Let's try to:
    1. Take imperfect actions
    2. Push ourselves little tiny steps towards our goals
    3. Know good enough
