Pharmacology – BENZODIAZEPINES, BARBITURATES, HYPNOTICS (MADE EASY)

Benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and sedativehypnotics are central nervous system depressants that work by enhancing the effects of the neurotransmitter gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA), resulting in anxiolytic (antianxiety), hypnotic (sleepinducing), anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties. This pharmacology lecture covers topics such as pathophysiology of anxiety and insomnia, role of GABA in the central nervous system, structure and function of GABAA receptor, limbic system, mechanism of action and side effects of benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and nonbenzodiazepine sedativehypnotics. Drugs mentioned include; Alprazolam, Chlordiazepoxide, Clonazepam, Diazepam, Lorazepam, Temazepam, Pentobarbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital, Zolpidem, Zaleplon, and Eszopiclone.

Sedation in ICU Patients (Part 1) – ICU Drips

For the next lesson we start our discussion of sedation in ICU patients and ICU sedation medications. Sedation is something that is used frequently in critical care and it has many potential uses and benefits, but some associated risks.
We start the lesson of talking about what sedation is and what it can do for our patients. From there we move on to talk about the many different reasons that we would use sedation in the ICU and break down each of those reasons and explain a little bit more about each one. Finally we finish this lesson up talking about our monitoring of patients on sedation, specifically talking about the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS).
Hopefully after watching this lesson you will have a good foundation of understanding about ICU sedation and the purpose of its use as well as the potential benefits that can come from it. In the next lesson we will begin talking about the many various forms of sedation medication.

A sedative is those drugs which make the patient calm and relax without causing sleep, although the patient may feel dizziness and may lose alertness or responsiveness. Hypnotics are the drugs which make a person calm but also induce sleep. This is an extension of a sedative dose of any drugs. Sedative in large dose act as hypnotics. The target of Benzodiazepine is on GABA receptor because GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in CNS. GABA is consisting of five alpha, beta, gamma subunits that span the postsynaptic membrane. The influx of chloride Ions cause hyperpolarization of the neuron and decrease neurotransmitter by inhibiting the formation of action potentials.
