The iphone 13 is REVOLUTIONARY, as Apple always promotes. But, would I upgrade to the iPhone 13 Pro from my iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max? Or even the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max? The iPhone 13 is amazing, but the BIGGEST NEWEST Feature in my opinion is the Cinematic Mode, which is actually Software Driven. Now, I’ve watched a ton of videos on the iPhones 13, iPhone 13s? Like the 13 Mini, Pro, Max and I’ve used the 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, 12 Pro and Pro Maxes, Pro Maxes… Overall, if you’re interested in video making, shooting, creating AT ALL you NEED to know about the Cinematic Mode, for a few reasons. I wasn’t going to upgrade to the 13 Pro but I straight up got fomo after hearing about this camera and I couldn’t sleep, so I hopped on my imac at 3am and preordered mine. Which is pretty pathetic, but I’m so glad I did.

CINEMATIC MODE
What is it? It’s like Portrait mode photography, but now for video
At first I laughed at how cheesy it looked, I thought it looked like a cheap 3rd party software like how you change your background on a ZOOM Call.
But Then I went to the mountains and tried it out
We know that it’s fantastic at throwing focus when you tap the screen
AUTO Changes focus on faces, Based on who is looking at Camera

We also know that your iPhone 13 will automatically switch lenses when you get too close to an object

CHANGE FOCUS
I picked up my iphone and locked focus on the background behind kierra, hit record and then when I went to edit, and deactivated MANUAL TRACKING mind blown it automatically focused on her face. The DOTS were KEYFRAMES of what is in focus.
CHANGE APERTURE
Now, I had to go back and click the aperture/fstop button and sure enough, it gave me the option to change my fstop aka how MUCH of the frame is in focus, AFTER shooting it.
Here are some examples of the same shots at f2 and f16
I knew that they were making the Wide Lense to be more sharp, and have more of your frame in focus…but THIS IS CRAZY. You CANNOT Miss a SHOT. It shoots your clip with EVERYTHING in focus, and then you can CHOOSE what/or who is in focus and then how much focus is applied.
Now, this only shoots 1080p, you can’t use the WIDE angle (probably because it’s a macro lens), and changing the aperture does NOT give you more light because it’s ALL in focus. But look at the shots you get this is nuts.
Waited for a camera like this for over 5 years since the LYTRO VR camera came out with a “similar” feature. BUT I did not expect this in a phone and I didn’t see ANYONE talk about this.
This changes everything not just for phones, phone cameras or mobile filmmaking but like, cameras. I don’t know if I like it, honestly. It reminds of 360 footage where you capture everything and choose later. It’s like the film vs digital argument where you lose the magic of the shot because you don’t have to try as hard or care as much about the little details. HOWEVER, I think is an amazing tool especially if you don’t have a camera setup yet. Or if you’re climbing mountains, this will take SO much weight out of my backpack.
You can edit Cinematic mode video effects in the Photos app on any of these devices with iOS 15 or iPadOS 15:
