Azithromycin is an macrolide class of antibiotic used for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections.
This includes
middle ear infections,
strep throat,

WHAT ARE MACROLIDES?
They are antibiotics having a macrocyclic lactone ring with attached sugars.

MACROLIDE ANTIBIOTICS
Erythromycin is the first member discovered in the 1950s
Roxithromycin, Clarithromycin and Azithromycin are the later additions.
These are antibiotics having a macrocyclic lactone ring with attached sugars
MECHANISM OF ACTION OF AZITHROMYCIN
The Azithromycin inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by an effect on ribosomal translocation
The drugs bind to the same 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome as chloramphenicol and clindamycin
ANTIMICROBIAL SPECTRUM OF AZITHROMYCIN
It is a narrow spectrum antibiotic
Spectrum is similar to Penicillin G. Mostly gram positive and few gram negative bacteria.
Streptococcus pyogenes , Str. Pneumonia, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Clostridium, Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Listeria
In addition, Campylobacter, Legionella, Branhamella catarrhalis, G. vaginalis and Mycoplasma (which are not affected by penicillin are also highly susceptible to erythromycin)
Moderately sensitive to H. influenza, B. pertussis, C. trachomatis, N. meningitidis and Rickettsiae
Ineffective against Enterobacteriaceae, other gram negative bacilli.
AZITHROMYCIN SIDE EFFECTS
1. Gastrointestinal –epigastric pain, diarrhea
2. Reversible hearing loss
3. Hypersensitivity –fever, rash
AZITHROMYCIN INTERACTION
It inhibits hepatic oxidation of many drugs –it rises plasma level of theophylline, carbamazepine, valproate, ergotamine and warfarin

Streptococcal pharyngitis, tonsillitis, mastoiditis
Alternative prophylaxis for RF and SABE
Diphtheria, Tetanus as an adjuvant to TT
Syphilis and gonorrhea

Azithromycin Medication Information (dosing, side effects, patient counseling)
Your medication Azithromycin
Azithromycin is also known by the brand names: Zithromax, ZPak and Zmax.
Azithromycin comes in 250, 500 and 600 mg tablets, 100 mg/5 mL and 200 mg/5 mL oral suspension, and 1 g power packets.
Azithromycin is most commonly used to treat bacterial infections. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, azithromycin is usually taken by mouth with or without food usually once to twice daily. If upset stomach occurs take azithromycin with food. Do not take antacids within 2 hours of taking azithromycin. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. It is important to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear.
Some common side effects with azithromycin include upset stomach, headache, itching, and diarrhea.
Some less common side effects with azithromycin include a heartbeat that does not feel normal, changes in hearing, chest pain or pressure, dizziness, and vaginal discharge or itching.
While taking Azithromycin, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if:
• You have signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, tightness of the chest, etc.)
• A very bad skin reaction occurs, such as red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, red or irritated eyes; or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, or eyes. This can be a sign of StevensJohnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Azithromycin liquid needs to be stored at room temperature and shaken well before each dose is given. Use the measuring device received from the pharmacist or doctor. Any liquid remaining after 10 days needs to be thrown away. All other forms of Azithromycin are kept at room temperature, in a dry place.
