A Rare Glimpse into the EYE of Hurricane IDA!
Hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. On August 29, 2021, and on the 16th Anniversary of a Category 5 Hurricane (Katrina) making landfall on Louisiana soil, another highend Category 4 Hurricane (Ida) made landfall near Port Fourchon, Louisiana. Storm Chaser Jeff Piotrowski arrived two days prior to get ready to film/document/chase Hurricane Ida. Arriving in Houma, LA the first thing he see’s is a rainbow. He knew, however, that rainbow would probably be the last good weather he would see for the next 72 hours. Hurricane Ida was in the Gulf of Mexico rapidly intensifying into a Cat. 4 and almost Cat. 5 Hurricane. On the day of landfall, he changed his position from Houma, LA to Mathews, LA. The NHC (National Hurricane Center) model data indicated a more easterly and north track after landfall. Jeff intended to LIVE Stream as he made his way through the storm as he had done for Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Hurricane Michael, Hurricane Laura but the internet infrastructure failed very quickly at his location in Mathews.
When I edit his footage I usually have a story to tell because I mirror the conversation that he has with our followers during a LIVE Stream. It makes for easy editing and filling in the blanks. I didn’t have a LIVE stream to mirror the additional footage to, So I chose to focus on the few hours before the eye of Hurricane Ida approached Jeff’s location. I found that the Hurricane Hunters released footage of their last flight into the eye of Ida just as it was making landfall in Louisiana. Look for the links below for original footage by Staff Sgt. Focusing on the eye of Ida, I envisioned telling the story through minimal narrative and using visual only with natural sound. It was incredible to see the eye as viewed by the Hurricane Hunters and then to see the destruction as it happened on the ground. Albeit there were a few hours difference between the actual original landfall when the HH footage was shot and when Jeff shot the footage as the eye made its way to Mathews. The concept is still the same and a person can only image how brutal the ground footage must have been at original Landfall in Port Fourchon with winds of 150mph. Wind gusts at Mathews were recorded at 125mph.
