Fluticasone is also known by the brand name: Flonase.
Fluticasone comes in a 16 gm bottle that contains 120 sprays. This medication is also available as an over the counter product in different sized bottles.
Fluticasone is most commonly used for allergy symptoms. Fluticasone is always used in the nose. Do not take this drug by mouth. You will need to prime the pump by spraying the nasal spray into the air until you see a fine mist come out. Close one nostril off by placing your finger on top of it while you spray into the other nasal cavity. Breathe in through the nose while you press down once to release spray, and then breathe out from your mouth.
Standard dosing of fluticasone ranges from 1 spray in each nostril once daily up to 2 sprays in each nostril once daily.
If you miss a dose of fluticasone:
• Use a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
• If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
• Do not use 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.
One common side effect with fluticasone is headache.
Some less common side effects include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
When taking fluticasone, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever
• Bad nose irritation
• Nose sores
• Bad nosebleeds
• Change in eyesight
• Nose discharge that is not normal
• Crusting in the nose
• Runny nose
The best way to store fluticasone:
• Store at room temperature. Throw away any part not used after labeled number of doses are used.
• Store upright with the cap on.
• Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
• Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs.
