Examination of the Jugular Venous Pressure (JVP) – Clinical Examination Skills – Dr James Gill
Examination of the Jugular Venous Pressure is an important test as it allows a doctor to assess the pressure present in the right atrium of a patient’s heart.
It is vital to ensure that the JVP is assessed for respiratory abdominal and cardiac examinations.
The clinical assessment of the jugular venous pressure can a challenge, hence it is important that the patients head is relaxed on the examination couch in order to allow the JVP to be visible and not blocked by the presence of the SCM muscle heads
The JVP acts as a manometer of the right atrium, hence it is crucial to be examined to determine a patients status in a large number of clinical cases. Thus this clinical examination is reiterated at many stages of a students medical school training
