No fish, no future – the disappearing lake | DW Documentary
Lake Balkhash in southeastern Kazakhstan is shrinking. For fishermen like Erbolgan Erbosynov, it’s an existential threat. Fish are everything to him: his livelihood, his culture, and his tradition.
Again and again, those fishing on Lake Balkhash are coming home with nearly empty boats. One reason for the meager catches is the Snakehead fish. It’s said that somebody released the predatory fish into the lake, and since then it has been multiplying rapidly and preying on other species. Environmentalists have another obvious explanation: They say the problem lies with the lake’s tributary — the Ili River. In recent years, neighboring China has diverted more and more water from the Ili to irrigate agricultural land. Will Lake Balkhash suffer the same fate as the famous Aral Sea, which has now almost completely disappeared? A report by Alexander Prokopenko.

New IPCC report: More heat, more extreme weather events | DW News
Carbon pollution has risen to such extremes that a key threshold in the fight to stop climate change — limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of the century — will be crossed within the next 15 years. That is one of the key findings from a landmark report approved by delegates from 195 countries and published Monday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The analysis, which comes amid recordbreaking heat and rains that have rocked rich and poor countries alike, draws on more than 14,000 peerreviewed studies to assess the physical science of climate change. It paints a sober picture of a planet warped beyond recognition by members of a single species in the space of just a few hundred years. “This report is a reality check,” said Valérie MassonDelmotte, cochair of the IPCC working group that prepared it.
In 2015, world leaders pledged to limit warming by the end of the century to well below 2 C — ideally 1.5 C — in a global effort to avoid escalating catastrophes. But they are instead pursuing policies that put the planet on track for 3 C, according to Germanbased research group Climate Action Tracker. While the 1.5 C target will be broached within a couple of decades, temperatures could be brought back below it by the end of the century under the report’s most ambitious scenario for cutting pollution. As well as rapidly decarbonizing the global economy, it would involve sucking enormous amounts of CO2 out of the atmosphere. But the technology to do so is expensive, and there is little evidence to suggest it could work at the scales needed.

Tens of thousands evacuated while countless volunteers fight the flames | DW News
The wildfires raging across southern Europe may be a sign of things to come. Turkey is battling its most destructive blazes in living memory. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from coastal regions and huge swathes of forest destroyed. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has come under fierce criticism over the disaster.
DW’s Julia Hahn reports from Milas on the Aegean coast, where countless volunteers have joined the fight to contain the fires.
Scientists also blame climate change for the wildfires devastating parts of neighboring Greece. A massive fire on Greece’s second largest island Evia is continuing to rage. It’s destroyed homes and businesses as well as vast tracts of forest. Thousands have been evacuated. Ferries and warships are moving people to safety, as strong winds spread the flames.
DW correspondent Barbara Wesel is near the capital Athens. She spoke to the head of the Academy of Athens about the way forward.
It’s an urgent warning from the United Nations on global warning. The stark verdict is that major climate change is inevitable and the rise in sea levels is irreversible. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control (IPCC) says the rise in global temperatures could well top the danger limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030. That’s sooner than previously thought. But the panel says it’s not too late to cut greenhouse gases.

Taliban seize control over Afghanistan’s north | DW News
The Taliban have overrun the northern provincial capital of Kunduz as their offensive continues. It is a major blow for Afghan forces and it is not the only city where fierce fighting is taking place.
The Taliban’s political spokesperson Mohammad Naim told AlJazeera TV on Sunday that the radical Islamist group had no ceasefire agreement with the Afghan government and warned the US against further intervention. He also blamed the government for the fighting, calling them the aggressors and claimed the Taliban’s attacks were a response.
Adam Weinstein, research fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, told DW that he does not think it is inevitable that the Taliban take over the whole country, but the Afghan government will have to change its strategy. Weinstein was not sure that the Biden administration would be willing to accept the risk associated with continued support for the Afghan government which may mean the end of US airstrikes against the Taliban.
He also believes that the peace talks are no longer viable, but that better resistance from the Afghan army and pressure from other regional actors could force the Taliban to the negotiation table.

Wildfires in Greece: Could authorities have acted sooner? | DW News
Wildfires in Greece devoured wooded areas in a national park north of Athens, with 39 villages also evacuated on the island of Evia. The fires have ravaged homes and businesses, in addition to killing animals.
Two people have died, including a volunteer firefighter, with 20 people receiving hospital treatment.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed the situation while visiting the fire department headquarters in Athens. He said procuring assistance for the victims of the fires would be his “first political priority.”
“When this nightmarish summer has passed, we will turn all our attention to repairing the damage as fast as possible, and in restoring our natural environment again,” the Greek leader said.

In der Türkei ist die Katastrophe schon da die schweren Waldbrände im Süden und Südwesten des Landes müssen gestoppt werden.
Auch im Nachbarstaat Griechenland brennt es. Auf der Insel Euböa stehen die Wälder den siebten Tag in Folge in Flammen. Zahlreiche Dörfer wurden evakuiert. In zwei weiteren Regionen brennt es ebenfalls: auf der Peleponnes und im Norden der Hauptstadt Athen es heißt, die Feuer dort seien weitgehend unter Kontrolle.

China is able to manage everything much better. They just don't want to preserve more water for this lake. Even Kazakhstan's authorities are afraid of China. They say not too much about the persecution of Uighurs in China. However, Uighurs are almost the same ethnic group with Kazakhs, and many Kazakhs live and suffer in Chinese camps too.
Planting moringa forests could greatly help them survive as the fish disappear.
I wonder what the outboard is, it resembles a 20hp yamaha four stroker with the speed and front gear selector. But difficult to say with it being covered!

We should all go for like a year or so without fish and shellfish so we can get our fish populations back. Cause once all the fish are they gone. At least put another limit on the amount your allowed to catch.

In fact, they originally ended up in that Crofton, Maryland pond because they were brought here for eating. … Snakehead meat is firm, white, and flaky.
