Australia has delivered more than 8,000 COVID vaccines to Papua New Guinea, but the country faces an enormous task to get them to frontline health workers in remote regions.
Even the biggest hospitals in the capital Port Moresby are struggling to cope with the pandemic, with hundreds of new cases recorded every day.

Aus-PNG Network: Covid-19 in PNG’s provinces
On Wednesday 21 April, the Lowy Institute’s AusPNG Network held a panel discussion with health professionals from provinces in PNG to talk about the Covid19 situation and how local officials are contending with the virus.
Papua New Guinea is dealing with a widespread outbreak of Covid19 that has placed already stretched health services across the country under intense strain. While the situation in the capital Port Moresby is difficult, the pandemic’s impact is also being felt in provinces across the country.
Panellists included Dr Pamela Toliman, PNG Institute of Medical Research, Goroka; Dr Stella Jimmy, Provincial Coordinator Covid19, West Sepik Provincial Health Authority, Vanimo; Professor Brendan Crabb, CEO, Burnet Institute, Melbourne; and Shane McLeod, Project Director, AusPNG Network (host).

The National Operations Centre in the capital Port Moresby is now in lockdown, and all workers and visitors to the centre in the past seven days are being tested, including PM James Marape.

PNG vaccine rollout begins amid COVID surge | 7.30
The World Health Organization says the COVID19 outbreak in Papua New Guinea is at a \”critical\” stage. Cases have now been detected in every part of the country and there is widespread community transmission.
Emergency medical workers from Australia have been supporting local health workers and a new Australianfunded field hospital has just opened.
PNG correspondent Natalie Whiting takes us inside.
