Is sulfasalizine right treatment for Palindromic Arthritis? – Dr. Yogesh Singh
There is an entity called as Palindromic rheumatism, wherein individuals get episodic join pain, joint swelling in restriction. These come in restriction. So they get joint pain and then it gets better. It may range for time period from weeks to months, again they get an attack for few weeks to months, and again they are alright. This is an entity called as Palindromic rheumatism. There are many entities causing Palindromic rheumatism. It could be rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis arthritis, IBD associated arthritis, sarcoid arthritis. So there are lot of conditions. But the most common condition for Palindromic rheumatism is rheumatoid arthritis. In rheumatoid arthritis, this Palindromic rheumatism is a mild form of arthritis. Generally we start the individual on hydroxychloroquine take about 3 – 6 months to have full effective at the end of 6 months, if an individual is taking hydroxychloroquine regularly but an individual continues to have joint attacks, then in such cases we may add other medications like sulfasalazine, methotrexate or lefrinomide. So if this hydroxychloroquinehas been tried for over 6 months and the joint pain is still persisting, then they are having repeated attacks, then in such people sulfasalazine can be used.
