Thai Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya paid a visit to Santa Monica Thursday (3 NOV. 2016), less than one month after the King’s death, saying her father was \”a father to all Thais.\”\r
King Bhumibol Adulyadej, revered in Thailand as a demigod, a humble father figure and an anchor of stability through decades of upheaval at home and abroad, died on Oct. 13. \r
He was 88 and had been the world’s longest reigning monarch.\r
\”As our distinguished guests may be aware by now, people across Thailand are still mourning the passing of our King, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. His Majesty King Bhumibol, my father, was also regarded as a father to all Thais,\” said the Princess during an event to help expand the Thai film industry. \r
\”He was the first and only Thai King who was born in the United States – in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The image of His Majesty working tirelessly to improve the livelihoods of the Thai people will always be remembered.\”\r
Bhumibol was viewed by many in the majority Buddhist nation as a bodhisattva, or holy being who delays entering nirvana to aid the human race. But while junta leaders, prime ministers and courtiers approached him only on their knees, Bhumibol was remarkably downtoearth. He rolled up his sleeves and hiked into impoverished villages and remote rice paddies to assess the state of his country. He played half a dozen musical instruments and jammed with American jazz greats including Benny Goodman.\r
\”Here I would like to talk about his interests in various fields of arts, whether it is music, painting or photography and in particular cinematography,\” continued Princess Ubolratana.\r
\”We in the film industry appreciate his benevolence and support in many aspects of Thailand’s filming and entertainment industry as a whole. Distinguished guests, tonight as ambassador of the Thai film industry I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our distinguished guests to the Thai night reception. The theme of tonight’s reception is Thaiconics, the icons of Thailand.\”\r
\”Why don’t you come to Thailand to experience ‘Thaiconics’ for yourself?\” she added, encouraging foreign filmmakers and producers to shoot in Thailand. \r
The event also promoted an incentive policy titled \”Thailand Film Incentive Measure,\” which is a cash rebate for those choosing to make films there.\r
