THAILAND: KING BHUMIBOL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

(3 Dec 1999) Natural Sound \r
\r
Birthday celebrations for Thailand’s King are in full swing in Bangkok.\r
\r
The revered monarch is 72 on Sunday, an age considered to be particularly auspicious by Buddhists.\r
\r
Festivities began on Wednesday with a colourful military parade.\r
\r
Twelve battalions of Thai guards deployed in Bangkok’s Royal Plaza for the annual event, a wellrehearsed showcase of precision marching and dazzling colour. \r
\r
This year it had an added dash of royalty. \r
\r
Among the guests was Britain’s Prince Andrew himself a military man who’s currently on an official visit.\r
\r
Thailand’s King Bhumibol is the world’s longest reigning monarch. He’s been on the nation’s throne for 53 years. \r
\r
Some commentators credit him with keeping the country together during the communist insurgencies of the Seventies. \r
\r
Now he’s approaching 72, the sixth cycle of his life, according to Buddhist beliefs. \r
\r
Thailand’s indulging in a series of events to celebrate.\r
\r
King Bhumibol has no actual power. Even so he’s dearly loved and closely listened to. \r
\r
In a speech he urged the armed forces to be conscientious in fulfilling their duty to Thailand.\r
\r
The tradition of \”trooping the colour\”, as it’s called, began in 1955. \r
\r
In a country that’s bursting with its own traditions this one’s unusual; it’s actually based on an annual British ceremony.\r
\r
The British and the Thai Royal Families have a close relationship.\r
\r
Accompanied by the Queen and the Crown Prince, King Bhumibol took the salute as members of all three arms of the military marched past. \r
\r
He’s their commanderinchief and part of the event included a renewing of the soldiers’ vows of loyalty.\r
\r
This was very much an official engagement. His actual birthday’s on Sunday when he’ll be meeting wellwishers from among the general public.\r

Here’s a regal dilemma to consider: Is it right for a king with 70 million subjects and wealth in excess of 70 billion dollars to be seen frolicking around in a crop top rather than a crown? Many people in Thailand are outraged by the skimpy outfits their monarch, King Vajiralongkorn, loves to wear. And they’re also furious at other aspects of his outlandish lifestyle – his womanising, his alleged brutality and the fact he seems to prefer the crisp air of the Bavarian Alps to the stifling humidity of Bangkok. Tom Steinfort reports that there is also the small matter of Fufu, the pet poodle the king controversially appointed as the Chief Marshall of Thailand’s air force.
